Waco, Texas, (January 16, 2002) On January 25-26 hundreds of Texas farm and ranch families will gather in Corpus Christi, Texas, for Texas Farmers Union's (TFU) 100th Centennial Convention. Our theme this year is "100 years of dedication to family farm agriculture."
"A new farm bill would signal a fresh start for the development of a new family farm and ranch policy," said Wes Sims, President of TFU. "The Senate needs to take action quickly on a new farm bill."
State Senator Carlos Truan of Corpus Christi will give the welcoming address. Tom Ramsey, candidate for Ag Commissioner, Zane Reese, candidate for the thirteenth district congressional seat will be addressing the convention. Other speakers will include Gary Condra, Ag Law Specialist; Dan Hunter, Southwest Peanut Growers Association; Larry Mitchell CEO Corn Growers; Jere Locke, Texas Fair Trade Coalition; Tom Buis, Vice President Government Relations National Farmers Union; Clay Pederson, Vice President Administration National Farmers Union; Leland Swenson, President, National Farmers Union and Dave Frederickson, candidate for President of National Farmers Union.
Delegates will consider and adopt TFU policy for the coming year considering many issues that affect rural Texas. Some of the issues will be mandatory country of origin labeling and fair trade agreements.
Our convention is dedicated to Benjamine "B.R." Parham. There will be a presentation to the family at the Friday evening reception. There will also be a new "Pioneer" honored. The band "Five Card Draw" will play for our entertainment at the Friday evening reception. The convention will culminate Saturday evening with a banquet featuring John Sharp, candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Texas.
