Texas Farmers Union
104th State Convention

January 13, 2006

Texas Farmers Union 104th State Convention is coming up very soon. Convention will start 2:00 p.m. Friday January 27, 2006 at the Menger Hotel 204 Alamo Plaza downtown San Antonio. Located next to the Alamo.

We will have several interesting speakers and programs. Some of which will be the National Farmers Union President Dave Frederickson who will be speaking at the Banquet on Saturday night. President Frederickson will not be seeking re-election this next year. Tom Buis will be speaking at the President’s Breakfast Saturday morning. Tom Buis is the only candidate for NFU President. David Van O’s candidate for Attorney General will be speaking at the Legislative Luncheon on Saturday.

Dr. Darrell Ray from the University of Tennessee will speak at the Saturday morning seminar on “Market Concentration”. There will be candidates for Congress and State offices who will also be here to speak to the convention and visit with individuals.

We will have lots of good food at the reception on Friday night. We will have entertainment from the Rural American Idol Program sponsored by Rains County Farmers Union. We will be inducting a new Pioneer in Agriculture. There will Mariachi’s and Flamingo Dancers at the Banquet on Saturday evening as well as a Progressive Auction following the Banquet.

Policy Drafting will be held on Saturday afternoon. The highest priority for Farmers Union is disaster assistance for our producers. Approximately 70% of the Counties in Texas have been declared disaster Counties. No assistance has been given to the producers for the loss of livestock or crops due to the hurricanes. Congress has zeroed out any assistance to any fire departments for the rest of the 2002 Farm Bill. Building a new Farm Bill is another topic that will be discussed.

Look forward to seeing you in San Antonio.

Sincerely, Wes Sims, President Texas Farmers Union
