Waco, Tx. - Texas Farmers Union (TFU) commends the Senate Agriculture Committee for including Mandatory Country-of-Origin labeling in the farm bill version the committee passed Thursday that will now go to the full Senate floor.
After turning down the competition title and Country-of-Origin measures in a narrow vote earlier in the week, Senate Ag Committee members voted 11-10 to accept an amendment by Senators Paul Wellstone, D-Miss., and Craig Thomas, R-Wy., to establish Mandatory Country-of-Origin Labeling for livestock, meat, fruit and vegetable products.
"We applaud the Ag Committee members for the foresight they have shown by including Country-of-Origin Labeling in their version of the farm bill," TFU President Wes Sims said. "This is a win for the American farmer and rancher and a big win for the American consumer.
"As a matter of choice, consumers should be given the option of choosing between purchasing imported food and food produced and processed under strict U.S. standards."
TFU encourages all Texas Farmers Union members, producers and consumers to contact Texas Senators Gramm and Hutchinson in support of keeping Mandatory Country-Of Origin Labeling in the final Senate version of the farm bill.
